On Tuesday, October 30, 2012 the Holyoke Rotary Club once again presented the William Dwight Distinguished Service to Holyoke Award.

As any true “Holyoker” knows, the Dwight family has a rich history within the city, and their name has been synonymous with commitment, integrity, and service to the community.  For those who don’t know the story, William Dwight purchased the Transcript Telegram in the late 1800’s and built the newspaper up from a weekly into a daily publication.  Over the years it became not only very profitable, but also a highly respected publication.

Because of his service to the community, it was suggested by Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy that the Transcript establish an award in William’s memory in 1939.

Each year the general public, a jury chooses someone whose tireless work and invaluable commitment to the City of Holyoke exemplifies the spirit of the man for whom the award was named.  After the demise of the paper in the late 1990’s, the Holyoke Rotary Club took on the responsibility of carrying the torch for the award.

This year’s recipient is Doris Ransford, the retired Director of the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce.  Knowing Doris personally, I can’t imagine a more deserving recipient.  Her 26 years of service for the Chamber allowed her to accomplish much within our great community.  So, my hat is off to you Doris – congratulations on being chosen as the recipient of this year’s award.  Past recipients – just to name a few are:  Angela/Joe Wright, Atty. Maurice Ferriter, Margaret “Peggy” Woods, Tom Hazen, Sue Ellen Panitch, Bill Collamore, Deb Buckley, and many, many more.  You are certainly in good company Doris.  I for one applaud you for your accomplishments and thank you for your service.  YOU ROCK!
